My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult

By Ilker YĆ¼cel (Ilker81x)

My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult has stood the test of fourth dimension as the band is on the verge of celebrating its third decade. A staple of the WaxTrax! era of American industrial music, Thrill Kill Kult has connected to defy categorization every bit the band has experimented with funk, rock, disco, and all points in between, all the while driven past fantastical lyrics that are every bit as sleazy and alluring as the grindhouse aesthetic the proper name implies. Driven by the core duo of Groovie Mann and Fizz McCoy, the group has long settled into a core lineup that includes bassist Mimi Star and guitarist Westin Halvorson, taking to the road in the summer of 2016 for the Elektrik Messiah Show tour. On the tour's third finish in Baltimore, ReGen Magazine caught up with the Thrill Kill Kult and spoke with Mann and McCoy about the ring's electric current status with a little insight into the upcoming follow-up to 2014's Spooky Tricks. Professionals and party animals alike, they touch life on the road (including an chestnut about quondam member Charles Levi), the band'south unique audition, sunny Los Angeles vs. freezing Chicago, and hippies vs. hipsters.

They say that the outset 2 or three shows set the tone for a bout.

Mann: Oh, they're fine, yep! People were going crazy, and I was similar, 'Wow!'

McCoy: Every song, the crowd was like, 'Yep! Thrill Impale!' It'south been swell though because it's very much a down catamenia for us now, and this tour was mainly to gratify some of the fans who were pretty irate most us skipping the East Coast last year.

At least you know that after nearly three decades, the audience is withal there.

Mann: Absolutely!

Are there any tour memories that yous'd like to share?

McCoy: I don't know; I missed out on most of the last bout considering I broke my shoulder a calendar week or so before the tour. They went without me for three weeks, and I only programmed everything ahead of time for them. They did 3 weeks, and so there was a calendar month off, and I was healing up and went out to play with a cast on.

What sort of routine practice you get through to keep fit for a tour, particularly after 30 years?

McCoy: Oh, I take no thought how nosotros do it. Everybody knows that we kind of similar to party a lot besides.

Isle of mann: Yeah, it'due south then hard not to sometimes.

McCoy: Only I have no idea how we do it, to tell the truth. When we practise like five, 6, or seven shows in a row, and we're driving around in a van, and we travel calorie-free because nosotros can't afford a crew… nosotros practice everything ourselves, but as nosotros've always done.

Isle of man: Yeah, sticking to and going dorsum to how we started is non a difficult affair for usa to do because we know it.

McCoy: Yep, this is our job, and we don't mind doing all the work because it's what keeps us going.

Mann: Some people just similar to be rock stars, and play their guitars, and when we go out with young bands, and we hear things like, 'Where's the rider?' Dude, we don't even have a rider!

McCoy: We don't need a rider!

Mann: Yes, y'all've got to unload your own equipment!

McCoy: That's actually how you lot survive in this business, man. You simply have to rely on yourself.

Mann: And your ego is irrelevant… well, until yous hit that stage, of course. (Laughter) Merely everybody pitches it, and nosotros figure if everybody carries in one thing, it helps the whole thing. Everybody is equal.

McCoy: Yep, nobody stands around and does nothing. Grab something, help bring information technology in, and we are a family unit. We picket out for each other, and there are no egos. If there are, then they're out.

Mann: Yes, we'll get out them in the urban center that we last played in.

Has that always happened?

McCoy: Several times.

(Laughter)

Mann: We've left Levi more than a few times.

McCoy: Yep, if he's not on the bus, fuck him… he'll find his own manner back.

Mann: We'd be on the van ready to drive to the next city, and he'd be asleep somewhere with some trick or something, and he did it plenty times that we were like, 'Okay, moving on!' (Laughter)

Chilling Tricks was in 2014; what is Thrill Kill Kult working on now?

McCoy: Nosotros just started a couple of months ago working on some new songs. We've got like v or 6 ideas. The game programme is that next yr is our thirtieth ceremony, so the whole thought is to have a new album, have a big tour, and practise the whole xxx year matter.

The lineup and the technology has changed, but in terms of how you approach the way you do things, what would you lot say has been the biggest modify for Thrill Impale Kult over the past 30 years?

McCoy: Nosotros write very much the same way, so I estimate just distribution… I mean, who buys CDs anymore? We print out two,500 of them and sell them, but I don't even mind to music, so I can't say I care very much. (Laughter)

Isle of mann: I, on the other paw, am a collector.

McCoy: I guess it'southward cooler to take CDs, and that'due south why we practise it because the artwork and the imagery is very much a part of the ring.

Mann: Aye, the concrete aspect of having artwork and… you know, it'due south just so much fun to design a CD and have all of that.

Every bit far as music in general, what have yous noticed as far equally people's attitudes toward music?

Isle of mann: I don't know, but I recall a lot of people that go into it retrieve that it'southward just some kind of simple formula and that anybody tin can do it. I recollect that things demand to fester or gel into a sound and really create something special. I think people wait too much too soon because there'south the attitude that, 'Well, I tin make music too!'

McCoy: Yes, 'I have a figurer,' and everybody is a band at present.

Mann: I think that'south absurd because information technology's given more creative opportunity, but then in that location are a lot of people that just continue for the ride and say, 'Gee, I call back I'grand going to become be a band,' and it's totally not that manner anymore. If you are going to be noticed, then y'all accept got to be a skillful writer!

McCoy: I often recall nigh what would have happened if the kids had now what we had, what would they have washed with it? I hateful, information technology took me forever just to learn how to use a estimator because I didn't grow up with it.

Mann: Yeah, and at present you have six-year-olds making music and making videos, simply I don't care how many thousands of programs or whatever you lot have; if you can't write a good vocal, you're not going anywhere.

You've said that every anthology has a story behind it – non necessarily a concept, just an thought and a direction. Is information technology ever a business for you to pinnacle what you did previously or how to evolve things?

McCoy: We effort to almost practise a 180 from the album earlier, just to mix it up and keep it interesting for u.s.a.; we don't like to exercise the same thing twice like so many other bands seem to exercise. They have one song and they take their formula.

Isle of mann: I think that'southward pretty lazy, to be honest.

McCoy: But and so again, it keeps the fans happy, considering you know how some people similar to say, 'Oh, I liked that ring's before stuff.' Simply and so many bands tend to just keep that i sound and never deviate from it. I recollect it'southward ameliorate to explore then y'all can become a vast, huge kind of clientele. Your audience will accept goth kids, secretaries, lawyers, doctors, so information technology's all over the identify.

Mann: Oh yeah, when we first started, that'due south how information technology was. There would be and then many different types of people are our shows.

McCoy: And we would meet people afterwards, and it'd exist like, 'Yeah, I'g a lawyer, then if yous e'er demand a lawyer, I'm your guy.'

Now, that's networking!

Isle of man: Right! There'd be lawyers and secretaries out with their girlfriends, and and then yous'd have the punk kids and the goth kids… you know, all the cocked farties. We didn't accept hipsters… we had hippies!

Are you saying that you don't like hipsters?

Mann: I got called one! (Laughter) Information technology was some street worker or a construction guy or something similar that. I alive in hipster central, so it's a scrap unavoidable, only I was similar, 'What?' Merely it was because I had on tan shoes or something.

Chicago hipsters seem to be different from the ones nosotros accept hither in Baltimore.

Mann: That's because they're all drunk.

McCoy: Yeah, Chicago hipsters are definitely more than into a expert time.

When in incertitude, the mutual language is always alcohol.
And so, what is inspiring you now as far as the new material you like to work on? What sorts of things enter into your thought process – movies, news, annihilation like that? Because you've been doing this for then long that it must be like clockwork.

Isle of mann: I think it sort of depends on what's going on in our lives and how we're feeling about how things are affecting us. Information technology sort of comes out through the songs and we don't really set out to exercise anything.

McCoy: Yeah, we write more fantasy stories equally opposed to taking things from reality.

The last album, in your words, was a picayune more voyeuristic, then in what ways volition these lyrical fantasies be a 180 from that?

Mann: Nosotros haven't actually thought about that merely yet.

McCoy: Yeah, we haven't really worked on the new album that much nevertheless to go into that side of things. We've gotten some grooves together and we're playing around with some sounds.

Mann: It's all pretty abstruse at this point, so nosotros don't know yet since we oasis't discussed that withal.

Thrill Kill Kult did a retrospective drove of unlike mixes of your WaxTrax! years, and there was the hint that yous would practise the same for the fabric after that.

McCoy: I… just haven't done it notwithstanding. (Laughter) I've been decorated and we're kind of lazy, I don't know. Just that is the concept that we're going to do the Interscope years, and then after that, the Sleazebox years.

The band's electric current lineup has been together for quite some fourth dimension.

McCoy: Yeah, it'due south been almost four or five years.

And well-nigh Thrill Impale Kult lineups don't…

McCoy: Aye, they don't concluding that long, right? (Laughter)

Isle of mann: Yeah, we had Levi for years, and we had Jacky, of grade.

Practice you keep in affect with your past members?

Mann: Oh yep. Jacky simply moved to L.A., and almost all of united states are at that place now, funnily enough.

Los Angeles has been referred to by a friend of mine as a black hole that sucks everybody in and nobody escapes.

McCoy: Well, the alternative is to go dorsum to freezing Chicago. (Laughter)

Mann: The sun, man… you don't realize 'til y'all alive at that place…

McCoy: L.A. is what you make of it, only like anywhere else.

So what other plans, also the new album, practise you accept in the pipeline?

McCoy: I've got some solo cloth that I'm finally finishing up. I'chiliad simply doing the concluding mixes, but I don't know what I'chiliad going to telephone call it withal, if it'll be called Fizz McCoy or something else.

Mann: I don't know. I take some ideas for a new Darling Candy album, and I've started to work with this other producer on some tracks, only it's all unnamed at this time.
